Katina Pinkama

Now is a rainy season. In buddhist literature, Vassana Kala, so called rainy season of three months starts from the Esala Full Moon Day-Vassana Kalo. The word "Vas" means the rains; "Viseema" means the dwelling. Therefore, Vas Viseema means to sojourn during the rainy season.

Katina season ushers in the Buddhist calendar with Vap, which is popularly known as "Cheevara Masaya". This year, Vap Full Moon Poya falled on Octorber 3rd. In KL, there has a Katina Pinkama activity today purposely to send a robes to monks, who observed "Vas" - Rainy Retreat, beginning from Esala to Vap.

Katina Pinkama is the most important event to perform for offering of robes to the Maha Sangha during the period from Vap Full Moon Day to Ill Full Moon Day.

In the words of Buddha, Katina Puja is the activity for Buddhist in which limitless merit is accumulated.‘Katina Cheewara’ are sacrificed or offered to monks.
